Why traceability matters now
For luxury watch and jewellery maisons, provenance is a standard, not a slogan.
Documented origin, auditable process data, and independent verification build confidence at the point of sale, simplify client service, and future-proof collections as expectations and regulations evolve.
Introducing TRACE5 — VDG’s five-step provenance framework
1) Track — source & audit
We document the origin at intake, match parcel carat weights, and confirm required certifications, such as the Kimberley Process (KP), to establish an auditable starting point. Relevant records are available to clients and auditors on request.
2) Register — identity & time-stamp
Each rough stone entering the programme receives a unique identity, with an independent, time-stamped off-site record. Records are held on independent, auditable cloud infrastructure.
3) Assess — map & plan
Advanced scanning creates a technical reference for each stone, and a locked plan guides downstream manufacturing and quality checks. These scans create a verifiable reference for later stages in the journey.
4) Craft — controlled manufacturing
The stone’s unique ID remains with its packet throughout bruting, faceting, and polishing; in-process QC is recorded for consistent results.
5) Ensure — independent verification & publication
A final independent verification is performed and a provenance record is issued, then published to trusted platforms (verification on Sarine; provenance published to Tracr) with secure QR/portal access for clients and auditors.

Each stage updates a cloud- and blockchain-backed record, creating a secure digital profile of every diamond’s journey—enabling reliable verification from rough through to polished without revealing sensitive process details.
